Botany: transverse section of leaf, (cryofracture) black hellebore (Helleborus niger)

The black hellebore or Christmas rose has typical, dorsiventral leaves, i.e., front and back differ. The anatomical structure is clearly recognizable in the cross-section. The whole leaf is encapsulated by the cuticle (intense green), a covering that the under-lying epidermis cells form themselves by secreting hardening procutin. Embedded in the epidermis (brownish) are the stomata that permit CO2 intake and transpiration. Hairs are also formed by epidermis cells. (Protection against evaporation and radiation). Between the upper and lower epidermis is the mesophyll, which is divided into the palisade and spongy (lacunose) parenchyma. The palisade parenchyma (light green) is rich in chloroplasts (photosynthesis), the rod-shaped cells being closely clustered at right angles to the leaf surface. Intercellular spaces ensure gas exchange. The spongy parenchyma (dark green) has numerous intercellular spaces. The cells serve to remove assimilates to the vascular bundles (bluish) in this layer, and ensure gas exchange with the environment through the stomata. In the vascular bundle (blue-gray) water and nutrients are transported.

Botanics/cereals: wheat grain (freeze fracture).

Clearly visible from top to bottom are the following: the outer layers of indigestible fruit shells that protect the grain from drying out, followed by aleuronk bodies (yellow-green massive grains), the biologically high quality seedshell and the aleuronk bodies (yellow-green massive grains). Wheat has been a cultivated plant and the main source of food for more than 20,000 years.

Botanik: Geraniaceae: Pelargonium ignes.

Geraniaceae include the ornamental plant Pelargonium, which originated in South Africa, as well as species such as the cranesbill and the heron beak. They have glandular hairs (shown in yellow) which serve as excretion for the release of certain substances, be it to protect the plant from predators or to secrete harmful substances. In the picture you can also see too small thorns of shortened hair and split openings.

Heilpflanzen: Korblütengewächse: Echte Kamille (Chamomilla recutita).

Zubereitungen aus den Blüten der Echten Kamille sind das Universalmittel in der Wundpflege: äußerlich bei Haut- und Schleimhautentzündungen sowie bakteriellen Hauterkrankungen (auch der Mundhöhle und des Zahnfleisches), innerlich bei entzündlichen Erkrankungen im Magen-Darm-Trakt und als Bäder, Spülungen oder feuchte Umschläge bei Entzündungen im Anal- und Vaginalbereich, des Nasen- und Rauchenraumes. Kamille-Dampfbäder und -Inhalationen haben schon so mancher verstopften Nase wieder zu freiem Durchatmen verholfen.

Die wichtigste Wirksubstanz in Kamillenblüten ist ätherisches Öl mit seinen Hauptbestandteilen Alpha-Bisabolol und Chamazulen. Diese7 Substanzen wirken entzündungshemmend und krampflösend. Hinzu kommen sekundäre Pflanzenstoffe - sie wirken entkrampfend und fördern die Verdauung - sowie Schleimstoffe mit entzündungshemmender und reizlindernder Wirkung. Aktuelle Forschungen zeigen: Die Inhaltsstoffe der Kamille hemmen zwei Enzyme, die bei Entzündungen eine entscheidene Rolle spielen und entschärfen zusätzlich aggressive Sauerstoffverbindungen, somgenannte freie Radikale.

Nutzpflanzen: Doldenblütler (Apiaceae): Wilde Karotte (Daucus carota), Frischpräparat.

Das Bild zeigt einen Querschnitt durch die Wurzel einer Möhre. Die Pfahlwurzel der Möhre enthält sehr viel kristallines Beta- Karotin, was ihr die kräftig orangene Farbe verleiht. Carotinoide können antioxidativ, antikanzerogen und immunmodulatorisch wirken.

Botanik: Blumennesselgewächse (Loasaceae): Loasa xylopodia

Diese Familie der überwiegend krautigen Blumennesselgewächse sind in den amerikanischen Tropen und Subtropen verbreitet. Sie werden wegen Ihrer auffälligen Blüten gezüchtet. Loasaceae bilden borstige, oft starre Brennhaare aus. Diese bizarre Behaarung macht potentiellen Fressfeinden wie Insekten ein Durchkommen praktisch unmöglich.

Pilze: Emericella nidulans.

Der Schimmelpilz Emericella nidulans (früher Aspergillus nidulans) besitzt, wie die meisten Pilze, kugelförmige Sporen, die mit einer dünnen Schicht des Proteins Hydrophobin überzogen sind. Hydrophobin sorgt dafür, dass Wasser an den Sporen abperlt. Dieser Stoff könnte, biochemisch produziert, Oberflächen wasserabweisend machen.

Raps (Brassica napus ssp. napus).

Das Bild zeigt ein Blütenblatt des Raps. Bei vielen Blütenpflanzen ist diese warzige Zellstruktur auf den Blütenblättern zu finden. Raps ist eine wirtschaftlich bedeutende Nutzpflanze aus der Familie der Kreuzblütengewächse, zu der auch Senf und Kohl gehören. Raps wird in Mitteleuropa als Nutzpflanze, in erster Linie zur Gewinnung von hochwertigen Ölen angebaut. Der Hauptteil des Rapses wird in der Produktion von Rapsölmethylester (RME) eingesetzt, der auch unter dem Begriff Biodiesel bekannt ist.

Zellen des Eisenhut

Dieser Gefrierbruch zeigt den inneren Aufbau von Zellen eines Eisenhut-Blattes (Aconitum napellus). Im Zellinneren befinden sich neben dem Zellkern mit Kernkörperchen (hier rosa/rot) auch zahlreiche Vesikel (gelblich), die giftige Alkaloide und Katecholamine enthalten. Schon wenige Gramm der Pflanze können eingenommen beim Erwachsenen zu Atemstillstand und Herzversagen führen.

Pollen der Rosskastanie

Auf dem Foto sind reife, trockene Pollen zu sehen. Sie sind die Träger der männlichen Erbsubstanz der Blütenpflanzen. Die stachlige Oberfläche dieser Pollen (im trockenen Zustand eingeklappt) lässt sie an Häarchen der Insekten anhaften; so werden sie von Blüte zu Blüte getragen. Pollen können Allergien auf Haut und Schleimhäuten empfindlicher Personen auslösen. Die Rosskastanie wird als Zierbaum kultiviert und in Grünanlagen gepflanzt.

Swimming fern (Salvinia natans)

Salvinia natans is a plant only a few centimetres high. It consists of two floating leaves and a third, submerged leaf with roots. Salvinia floats on slow flowing or standing waters. The plant has special hairs on its surface, which are extremely hydrophobic coated and contain air when immersed. This results in a buoyancy that immediately returns the blade to the surface..

Lamination

The term lamination stands for the bonding of foils with a firm base, one could also call it' mounting'. For the products in the' AluVerbund' category, a high-quality art print - a monthly sheet from the LifeSciences calendar - is mounted on a 3mm thick aluminium composite trunking material.

Lamination of carrier material

The art print is applied on the reverse side of a double-sided adhesive film. After the protective film has been pulled down, the art print is rolled' cold' onto the aluminium composite plate.

An extra stability of the plan is achieved by mounting the solid suspension profile on the bottom side of the picture facing the wall.

The art prints used here are the remainder of our LifeSciences Calendar (Hidden Worlds) published in the years 2002 to 2017.
The image motif was created by the renowned, internationally acclaimed science photographers Oliver Meckes and Nicole Ottawa (eye of science) on the company's own screen, Oliver Meckes and Nicole Ottawa (eye of science).

We have carefully separated out the particularly high-quality printed monthly newspapers and prepared them for use by lamination. The surface of the art print is coated with special UV spot varnish. This gives the pictures a special brilliance. Because the product already looks very noble, we have refrained from adding an additional cover, such as acrylic.

AluDibond: Dibond® is a brand for a rigid sandwich material. The brand is owned by the manufacturer 3A Composites.
Dibond® consists of two 0.3 mm thick aluminium plates thermally bonded with a polyethylene core. Dibond is correspondingly lighter than aluminium.
FirstBond GbR from Schleswig-Holstein (Germany) has developed a' imitator' product with similar properties under the name' FirstBond', which is used in our aluminium composite products.
